The Department of Conservation / Te Papa Atawhai manages nearly 60% of the project’s land area, including Aoraki Mount Cook National Park.
DOC is a founding partner in Te Manahuna Aoraki Project and also actively protects biodiversity in the project area as the manager of conservation land. The Department’s Kakī Recovery Programme near Twizel that has brought back the kakī/black stilt from the brink of extinction.
